PJM Interconnection has proposed delaying its upcoming December 2024 capacity auction by six months, moving it to June 2025.

A delay would impact at least three upcoming PJM capacity auctions. These auctions are essential for ensuring PJM has sufficient power supplies to meet future demands.

In late September, the Sierra Club, Natural Resources Defense Council, Public Citizen, Sustainable FERC Project, and the Union of Concerned Scientists filed a complaint with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), arguing that PJM’s auctions fail to account for reliability must-run power plants. The groups are urging FERC to require PJM to update its rules before proceeding with the next auction. This complaint has garnered support from PJM's market monitor, the Organization of PJM States, Inc. (OPSI), and the Maryland Public Service Commission.

The auction for PJM's 2025/2026 delivery year cleared at $269.92/MW-day for much of the grid operator's footprint, a nearly tenfold increase from $28.92/MW-day for the 2024/2025 auction.
